Video Game Accomplishments Can Tackle Real World Stressors

Leading up to the release of DeepWell DTx‘s action video game for stress we’re reviewing the therapeutic elements that have been designed into the game.

Once a player is immersed, it is key to promote agency, competence and completion. This article references some key studies and does a great job of sharing how virtual accomplishments can lead to real world mental health improvements.

“…research has shown that individuals with (mental health concerns) who play video games report higher levels of intrinsic motivation, which can be a key factor in overcoming their condition. By experiencing success within the confines of a game, players can gain confidence and motivation to tackle challenges in their lives.”

Our brains treat simulation as reality when engaged in play, which sets the stage for learning new behaviors that can translate outside of the game environment. The more we experience that feeling of competence, the more we will extend it to our day to day lives.
