Video game research continues to show commercial games are great for mental health – if you use them correctly.
This article further expands on recent research that looked at 100,000 people and found playing video games – or even owning a console – can be good for mental health.
The results were not all positive, however. Over time, the scores indicated drops in wellbeing for those who played more than three hours a day. Scores continued to drop for each additional time increment measured.
We have learned from previous studies that why we play matters (specifically using gaming as a diversion from dealing with a life issue is not good for our mental health). Also how long we play also appear to matter.
Three hours a day seems like a very positive upper limit for game play, unless the player is using the game to manage severe trauma…. Super valuable information.
